While I was getting ready today, I was reminded of something that impacted me some years back. It comes from these words, found in the book of Deuteronomy.
“I call heaven and earth to witness against you today, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live”
The words “Choose Life” became a phrase I used regularly for some time!
Today I’m reminded of this in the context of Jesus, who is Life, the true bread of heaven given by the Father.
From the very beginning, the Father has set before us this choice. So as not to control us, and to allow us freedom and choice, Life and death have been a daily choice.
The advice given was this.
“You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
It was good advice! It still left man with a choice. But it’s amazing, the only tree man was advised not to eat of was that one. God intended man to eat of every tree, and central in the garden was the tree of Life. Man was meant to eat of the fruit of this tree!
And so, today, we have set before us Life and death, blessing and cursing. To choose Life, as we know, is to choose to eat of Jesus himself, the bread of Life.
I have to remind myself constantly. He is Life. There is nothing else on offer from the Father. It’s Jesus himself, the Life, or nothing.
“Unless you eat of my flesh, and drink my blood, you have no life in you.”
This choice is set before us. The bread of Life, the true bread, and the fake bread.
How I start this day is a choice. Which bread do I consciously choose to eat? Life or death?
Then throughout this day, there are choices to make. Which bread do I eat at this point? How do I respond in this situation? Is it Life, or death?
The Father urges us to choose with these words,
“Therefore choose life.”
He knows that the only Life on offer is the true bread, Jesus himself. He knows that is all we need for Life. And he urges us to choose Life. That is what Jesus did, he chose Life in the Father, remaining one with him.
Let us be conscious, and listen for the Fathers words as we walk through each day. With each situation we face, let’s hear his words and choose to eat of Jesus himself.
Let’s be people who listen to the Father as he urges us, saying,
“Therefore choose life.”
Eat the bread, drink the Living Water. Choose Life!
