Unless YOU Eat…..

Unless YOU Eat…..

“Unless YOU eat my flesh and drink my blood, YOU have no life in YOU.”

Yesterday Jesus fed the crowds. Today they’ve come again to eat, but Jesus offers them something different to eat. He offers himself.

The crowd have come wanting a sign. They want him to feed them as he did the day before. But they fail to see that what he did yesterday was a sign. THE sign. Today he is revealing what the sign was pointing to. He begins to unfurl the incredible truth that he himself is the Bread of Life, given by the Father.

The other day I was walking to meet someone, and Jesus says “Unless YOU eat my flesh and drink my blood, YOU have no life in YOU.”

Now I know this is simple. But it’s very often the simplicity that we miss, because we tend to over-complicate things. That’s why what Jesus revealed about himself was so incredibly profound yet so unbelievably simple. His simplicity, and when we take him at his word, has a profound meaning and effect on us if we open ourselves to receive him.

So when he says “Unless YOU…”, Jesus is making this personal. When he said this to me on Friday, it was personal. He was talking to me.

And this is profound I know.

There is no possible way that someone else can eat or drink for us.

There is no way for someone else to eat and drink for us and for us to experience the taste, the flavours, or the texture. Someone else may try to explain their experience of taste, flavour, and texture, but there is no possible way for us to experience those sensations unless we eat and drink for ourselves. They may be able to say to us, “It tastes like,” or “That flavour is intense!”

There is also no possible way for us to experience the benefit of eating and drinking unless we eat and drink for ourselves. We all know how it works. If someone doesn’t eat or drink, physically they will suffer from malnutrition and dehydration. If I don’t eat or drink, life fades, and no matter how much anyone else eats or drinks on my behalf, that goodness isn’t getting into me unless I eat and drink for myself.

Yes, Jesus was speaking to a crowd. But phrases like “Unless YOU eat…” are personal. He was addressing every person individually. He’s saying it to each one of them.

And he’s saying it to me. And to you. He’s addressing each one of us, and making this personal.

Take these posts as an example. I write what he tells me to write and when he tells me to write it. He talks a lot about being the Bread of Life and the Living Water, about eating and drinking of himself. These posts, hopefully, are at times an explanation of what Jesus tastes like to me. But that is it, it’s what he tastes like to me. You will never really know what he tastes like to me! I can say “He tastes like…..” or “Wow, that flavour is amazing!” I can share the Bread of Life, the Living Water with you, but if you don’t eat and drink of him yourself, it’s not personal to you. You can take away what I think it’s like to eat and drink of Jesus. Or you can taste him for yourself.

And my eating and drinking of him won’t bring you the benefit that you eating and drinking of him will. You might take encouragement, something to think about, or even disagreement away with you. But hopefully you can hear the cry behind the written words, “Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good!” Hopefully these posts say to you “Taste and see that the Lord is good. For yourself!”

Jesus is saying to me, “Unless YOU eat…” Can you hear him saying those words to you also?

Eat the Bread. Drink the Living Water. Don’t just take my word for it! Taste and see that the Lord is good. For yourself!
