Twice in the last week, I’ve found the verses in Hebrews 4 come up in conversation with people.
Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, “Today, if you hear his voice,do not harden your hearts.”
For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his. Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.
And this is the second emphasis on “today” that I’ve thought about in a week, the other being “Give us THIS DAY our daily bread.”
It seems to me that “today” is a very important moment in time. It’s the only moment in time when you and I can enter into the rest of God. I may have been in the rest of God yesterday, but I may exit from that rest today through my own choices and decisions, my striving and effort. Who knows whether I will be in the rest of God tomorrow? That is tomorrow and I have the choice when tomorrow becomes today to enter into his rest. Nothing of yesterday will guarantee that I’ll be in his rest today. Nothing of today will guarantee that I’ll be in his rest tomorrow. Today is today, it’s why we must ask him to “Give us THIS DAY our daily bread.”
To eat of the true bread of heaven, is to eat of Jesus. “…but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” This bread is for “THIS DAY,” so that I might enter his rest.
We’re told in Lamentations that his mercies are new every morning. That is because there is fresh bread from heaven for today. His mercies are new, because he is always new.
To finish, I read this quote today and recognise the truth in it. Everyone is searching for rest, spiritually speaking, and some people are so caught up with “doing” that they cannot enter into the the rest of “being.” The rest of being doesn’t mean doing nothing, it actually means that our doing will be effective, influential but not stressful. Can anything that comes from being in the rest of God be stressful?
“Rest is a place where mankind will be drawn to us – everyone is searching for rest.”
