“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing.”

The last couple of days my attention has again been caught by the story of the prodigal son.

It dawned on me that both sons had to move from servanthood to sonship.

We all know the story, so I won’t recount it. We know the younger son wasted his inheritance, and decided to return to his father’s house to become a servant. He had decided that was it for him, he wasn’t worthy.

And we know that the older son lived like a servant, working hard and not recognizing who he was.

Regardless of how we get there, we must come to know that we are sons. Whether we have wasted our inheritance and decided we can only be a servant because we’re not worthy to be a son, or whether we’ve worked hard and served but not ever lived as a son, we must come to the place where we know we are a son of the Father.

These two end up at the same place, their sonship revealed to them again, affirmed by the Father.

“No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing.” Jesus doesn’t want people who are servants. Servants don’t know what the master is doing! Jesus wants us to have that same relationship with the Father, so we can say “I only do what I see the Father doing.”

That was the incredible mark of the life of Jesus. He and his Father affirmed one another in their relationship. Jesus constantly affirmed his Father. “My Father.”

And the Father affirmed his son. “This is my beloved son.”

Jesus said to his followers,

“I am ascending to my Father and your Father.”

He says that to us. “My Father and your Father.”

He also said that,

“In that day you will know that I am in my Father, and you in me, and I in you.”

In that day. When is that day? It can be today! Today can be the day when we say “My Father” in exactly the same way as Jesus did.

Today can be the day when we say “My Father is working, and I am working.” Simply because Jesus and the Father are within us, and we live conscious of the Life within.

Today can be the day when the Father affirms us, “My beloved son.” And today can be the day where we affirm him. “My Father.”

Those words “My Father” must hold the same truth, the same proof of oneness as Jesus knew. They aren’t just mere words, they are an affirmation of oneness with “My Father.” They are proof that today, we are one with the Father in Christ.

Eat the Bread, drink the Living Water. Say with Jesus today, “My Father.”
